CAF interviews fashion multi-disciplinarian Ece Sukan on the changes she's witnessed in Turkey's creative industries and the future for her home country which bridges East and West both geographically and culturally.
Ece Sukan has a unique perspective on the Turkish fashion industry. Arguably the country’s most influential fashion figure, she’s seen waves of change since she began her career 15 years ago, and has held many roles within it. Stylist, editor, fashion writer, TV presenter, vintage archive owner and creative consultant, not to mention a hotly-followed street style influencer, Sukan is renowned as a multi-talented professional and entrepreneur.
In fact, after completing a degree in psychology, she had a stint in modeling, though her aim was always to become a fashion editor and she studied fashion styling at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. Channeling her passion for acting into her modeling and eventually a role presenting TV shows ‘Ece Sukan'in Moda Evi’ and ‘Ece Sukan’la N-Moda’ on national television station NTV, she gained access to major fashion weeks and key contacts to boost her styling work. Having access to these shows was also a big deal for the fashion-loving public in Turkey who were developing a growing appetite for it when the show launched in 2007. Additionally, Sukan introduced vintage fashion onto the scene. Having grown a personal collection of high-end vintage pieces on her travels, she decided to open it up to the public when she spotted an ideal retail spot in Istanbul.
