Galerie Esther Woerdehoff, Paris : restored colour photographs by Erwin Blumenfeld

The Paris-based Esther Woerdehoff Gallery is pleased to announce an exclusive exhibition of restored colour photographs by Erwin Blumenfeld. The photos were realized after the end of the war.

This exhibition is the first presentation of Erwin Blumenfeld’s (1897-1969) colour photos, which have been painstakingly restored to their former glory.

Erwin Blumenfeld, born to a middle-class Jewish family in Berlin, first established himself in the Netherlands, before moving to France, where he was recognised as an avant-garde artist. His first photos were published in the most famous magazines of the times, such as Arts et Métiers Graphiques, Verve, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Life. The life and work of Blumenfeld followed up the events in European history, which resulted him in being able to escape WWII, by fleeing to New York in 1941. It was here that he would become one of the most important fashion photographers of his generation.

His photos were realized in the USA, however his style and effects were influenced by European 1920s and 1930s photography, as well as the Dada and Surrealist art movements. Throughout his life, the photographer hopped between Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris and New York. His move away from Europe also marked his transition from black and white, to colour photography.
