Berlin – a city full of musical talent. There is a music scene that has been ignored by the media, left to lurk in the shadows, despite the fact that many of their songs are playing on repeat on several radio stations. Who are these musicians, which are loved by people and snubbed by magazines and TV channels?
These are the questions photographer Jim Rakete had on his mind when he invited 30 Berlin-based bands to his studio. Before the photo shoot musicians filled out an almost sadistically detailed questionnaire. The results are surreal black and white solo and group portraits.
After years of working with musicians, the photographer has noticed that the latest generation turns up on time and is reliable, assigning trashed hotel rooms and egoistic interviews to the past.
Jim Rakete has close ties to the music industry. He has photographed stars such as Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger and David Bowie. He has also worked as a manager of several great bands.
The ‘Rockpoeten’ exhibition, which was created in cooperation with radioeins radio, sees Jim Rakete honour Berlin’s musicians – regardless of whether or not the sitters are already signed to labels or still practising in basements and rehearsal studios.
Barbara Münzing and Heleen Claassen founded the gallery in January 2012. Barbara Münzing has headed the EYE D photography agency for many years and Heleen Claassen runs BASICS, agency for stylists and hair and make-up artists. The gallery enables this duo to live out their desire of expanding their years of experience in the international art scene. Rockpoeten (rock poets) is their first show.
