Thomas Struth - Photographs 1978 - 2010, the retrospective at Kunsthaus Zurich

He studied painting under Gerhard Richter and was tutored his photographic skills by Bernhard Becher. In the early 90s his ‘Museum Photographs’ were met with great acclaim and he has been considered one of the world’s most important and influential photo artists ever since.

Kunsthaus Zurich now presents his first European retrospective and provides an elaborate insight of Thomas Struth’s work.

Through over one hundred works, spanning three decades, it becomes evident that the artist moves freely between documentation and interpretation: he studies his motifs and interprets them at the same time. Both influences can be found in his pictures; those of painting and photography.

Following the retrospective’s travels through the most important museums in the United States, it has now arrived in Zurich and will follow on to Düsseldorf, London and Porto.

The exhibition was organised in cooperation with the North Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf Art Collection.
