Scopophiliaby by Nan Goldin, the artist's first exhibition in New York since 2007, on display at the Matthew Marks Gallery

For the first time since 2007, Nan Goldin will be exhibiting in New York. Matthew Marks is proud to host Nan Goldin's exhibition 'Nan Goldin : Scopophiliaby' in his gallery. Among other things, the exhibition features the American début of Scopophilia, a 25-minute slide installation that was acquired by the Louvre last year.

Scopophilia consists of more than 400 photographs from Goldin's career, her own, autobiographic pictures, paired off with new photographs ranging from fine art to sculpture from the Louvre collection. The title itself means as much as: The Joy of Seeing.

Evolving around themes such as love and desire, Scopophilia reflects both Goldin's very personal photographs as well as the unique chance of snapping away in the Louvre without limitations (an honour that Goldin received from the museum's director)

Nan Goldin on her own project: “Desire awoken by images is the project’s true starting point. It is about the idea of taking a picture of a sculpture or a painting in an attempt to bring it to life.”

Nan Goldin's works have been the subject of two large retrospectives. The first was organised by the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1996 and the second by the Centre Georges Pompidou in 2001. Goldin was admitted to the French Legion of Honor in 2006.

Last year, the Berlinische Galerie showed the exhibition: Nan Goldin: Berlin Work, Photographs 1984-2009. Her milestone piece, the slide installation 'Ballad of Sexual Dependency' was on display at the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis this year.

Scopophilia is Nan Goldin's eighth exhibition at the Matthew Marks Gallery since 1992.
