Slanted Magazine : issue #9 on Stencil. Type.
In ‘Stencil. Type’, Slanted magazine gets to the bottom of stencil fonts and their modern application, proving that this calibre of typography exhibits a very special and often underestimated aesthetic.
Slanted presents innovative works by Gavillet & Rust and their font label Optimo (Geneva), large formant art pieces by Christopher Wool (NY), an impressive photo series from Kabul by Francois Fleury (Paris) and much more.
The ‘Font labels, Fonts & Families’, ‘Font names Illustrated’ and ‘Typo lyrics’ categories each introduce contemporary fonts and designer from all across the world.
There is a lot to read too, interviews with John Boardley, Kouga Hirano and Chip Kidd, as well as a type essay by Hannes von Döhren.
In addition to this, numerous stencil works by professionals and students are presented (By Hauser, Schwarz, Mind Design, Ko Sliggers, Autobahn, amongst others).
The chapter pages are ornamented by headline font ‘NeoParts S9’, which has been exclusively designed for this issue by Huber Jocham. Readers of the latest issue can get their free copy of the font upon request.
The publication is wrapped in a poster – the third from a series of four posters, which form a complete set together.
PORN (#7) was the beginning, it continued with 4(#8) and now, with TYPE (#9), one can hold the third piece of the puzzle in one's hands.
