David Biene - Hopped-Up : Rock‘n Roll for yur bookshelf - photo book, party and exhibition in Berlin

On 13.06.2009 “Hopped-Up”, published by Onkel & Onkel, will be launched at a photo exhibition and after show party with a DJ and live band, at Berlin’s rock ‘n roll institution White Trash Fast Food.

Having spent five years researching in Europe, Berlin-based photographer David Biene, will present his European Hot Rod scene insider portrait: the 40s and 50s American Lifestyle, Rock ‘n Roll, Oldtimers, lovingly tuned and the rockabillies that drive them across Europe’s tracks.  

The book documents the American lifestyle that originated in the 1940s and was to change the world’s view of the country forever. Like Ford cars or Jack Daniel’s whiskey, the oil-smeared mechanic, the pomaded rockabilly or the gumchewing peroxide blonde are integral elements of American cult(ural) history. This culture is currently celebrating its revival in Europe and David Biene provides a real and honest insight of this world, his world, with photographs and interviews spread across 200 pages.

The mainly black and white photographs are accompanied by eleven interviews, which David Biene carried out on his travels between Spain and Norway. As an added extra, the book also includes two audio CDs. One of which plays 60 minutes worth of a recorded hot rod race, enabling the beholder of the book to transport themselves to the heart of this racing culture.

The other CD is a compilation of rare songs, and a song which was exclusively recorded for “Hooped-Up” by Berlin-based musician Tex Morton. Other tracks include the latest in rockabilly gems by Mystery Gang, Omar Romero, Star Mountain Dreamers, Billy Lee Riley and many more.
