2. Lumix Festival for Photojournalism : albino persecution in Tanzania, the biker subcultures of suburban Paris, the broken up gypsy camp by Rome ... 60 moving reportages

Following its successful premiere two years ago, the Lumix festival for young photojournalism will take place for its second time in Hanover. From 16 to 20 June 2010, seven pavilions of the former world exhibition venue will feature coverage and pictorial essays from all over the world.

The festival seeks to provide a platform for discussions, images and talent at the same time. The event is organised by the FH Hanover / Photography department and FreeLens.

A team of curators selected 60 best works, made up of approximately 1400 photographs from over 1000 applications from 70 countries submitted to the FreeLens Award Festival office. GoSee presents a selection of projects in a more detailed view. Further information on the exciting and at times highly moving projects can be found on the festival homepage.

Swedish photographer Johan Bävman’s ‘Albino In the Shadow of the Sun’ project, which documents the persecution of Albinos in Tanzania in poignant photographs, was met with great acclaim. In 2009, he was awarded the “UNICEF Foto des Jahres” (UNICEF Photo of the Year) and received further considerable awards, including the World Press Photo Award.

As a result of the climate change, the changing landscapes of Greenland confront its inhabitants with an ever-increasing range of difficulties, impeding their pristine way of living their lives in tune with nature. This is the subject matter of Andrea Gjestvang's ‘Greenland’ reportage.

Julia Glassberg and her camera accompany subcultures that are caught up in a constant struggle to resist consumer culture. Unusual living spaces are her photographic playground. In her ‘Bike Kill’ series, the French photographer accompanies the ‘Black Label Bike Club’, whose collective is based on bicycle culture and artistic creation.

In his ‘Casilino 900’ series, Alessandro Imbriaco eternalised a place, which is now confined to the arcades of memory. At the beginning of the year, the Italian police force broke up what used to be the largest gypsy camp in Europe. Over six hundred people made up the community that settled before the gates of Rome.

Not as political, but fascinating none the less, are the snapshots of New York's oldest street, which Michael Christopher Brown captured for his ‘Broadway’ project. The bustling activity and glowing colours are key ingredients of Broadway's offhand scenery as well as its picturesque quirkiness.

21 multimedia stories will be projected at the Design centre’s photo studio and shown on iMacs in the large ‘Lichthof’ during the whole festival.

Every festival day will conclude with a lecture by a major international photographer. The festival will close with a party as well as the FreeLens Award, Lumix Multimedia Award and HAZ audience award ceremonies.
