Frank Linders : in the mirror of time. 11 years of Frank Linder's self portraits on GoSee

Interlaken, Barcelona, Cape Town . . . for eleven years, photographer Frank Linders has been documenting himself and the world he lives in through self-portraits. The essence of the elaborate project can currently be inspected on the new website.

Self-reflection, self-projection, bordering on narcissism – that is what the self-portrait of our time stands for. Ever since the 1970s, the quest for answers on philosophy's greatest questions is more or less considered an elusive endeavour and has drawn its last breath as the crucial spark that would drive artistic craftsmanship.

Frank Linders explains his colour and photography concept as such: “The photographer is the material of his own works – an expression of one's own personality, disregarding any social norms. That makes you both victim and culprit at the same time.”

Andy Warhol in 1986, Man Ray in 1933 and Gustave Courbet in 1841 – what they left behind for us to gaze at, in all its sheer and artistic implicitness actually has its roots in the renaissance.

By the end of the 15th century, man discovered himself and his precious individuality – the art of the portrait was born. Over the course of time, the artist would manage to emerge from the position of a mere craftsman and move through the social ranks, sporting a whole new level of self-confidence – the self-portrait became an artistic discipline in its own regard.

Frank Linders' self-portraits can be found on his newly designed website.
