HIGH ALTITUDE : the +1000 Festival de Photographie de Montagne - presents a total of 10 exhibitions

HIGH ALTITUDE presents the +1000 Festival de Photographie de Montagne, 1,000 metres above sea level in the Swiss Rossinière.

Until the 19th of September 2011, visitors will have the opportunity to marvel at works of 40 international visual artists in ten exhibitions.

The festival is taking place for the second time and the location is a picturesque village in the region of Riviera-Pays-d’Enhaut. There simply could not be a location better suited to host this particular festival.

Rossinière, sitting at the base of the Swiss Alps, enjoys a legendary status renowned for its 17th and 18th century architecture, let alone the surrounding forest landscapes and mountainous regions.

In summer 2011, the HIGH ALTITUDE +1000 Festival contrasts the investigative and sometimes provocative positions of contemporary photographers with the rather folklorist identity of the small community.

The mountains have been conducting the rhythm of the locals since the beginning of time and they also form the centre-points of inspiration and longing for city folks as well. Is that assumption still valid, now that the local population tends to move away to bigger cities and the points of reference are increasingly found in urban dwellings?

At various locations in the village of Rossinière, the ten exhibitions and its 40 artists intend to find answers to this question and maybe they can even discover a few new questions?

Meet and greets with the artists, tours and lectures are all part of the programme alongside the exhibitions that constitute the festival’s core.

A catalogue entitled HIGH ALTITUDE accompanies the event. The book is published by the Italian publisher 5 Continents Editions and includes text by art historians, experts in geography, literature and photography on mountains, its mythologies, transformation and the way they have been portrayed.
