Neue Schule für Fotografie Berlin : 'If I can make it there' - four photographers explore the Big Apple

New York, still the city of dreams and the world’s most photographed city, also happens to be the subject for four photographers of the Neue Schule für Fotografie in Berlin. Anja Pietsch, Julia Jungfer, Bärbel Möllmann and Kathrin Brunnhofer set out to discover the city in their own way.

Anja Pietsch presents the many contradictions of city life; meanwhile Julia Jungfer is dedicated to following light and architecture.

Bärbel Möllmann asked various people about their dreams of NYC and captured her interview partners using a camera obscura. “I spent three months – from May to August 2010 – discovering various dreamers and photographed them at the location that represents their dreams. I shot the portraits with a camera obscura. I consciously chose a camera obscura, as it offers a great way of visualising dreams in photography. The individual’s actual aura rather than their looks is focused on.”

Kathrin Brunnhofer shot her images at New York Zoo in the Bronx. Her images of the moving dioramas in the birdhouse, as well as the gorilla portraits are directly linked to the city.

The student’s trips to New York have resulted in four fascinating series with one thing in common – a fascination of the NYC legend.
