SCREENings Photography Award presents : Awards Judge Bianca Winter, Deputy Head of Art Buying at Jung von Matt, on what constitutes a good photo
The ‘Internet goes Print’ provides professional photographers with the opportunity of taking part in a virtual SCREEning. It is the photography and creativity, rather than the actual design of the website, that makes up the deciding criteria. The aim of the competition is to provide photographers with an uncomplicated, yet qualified means of contacting industry insiders and important decision makers in the photography sector.
Bianca Winter is one of the judges and has been passionate about art buying since 1996. Having previously worked at agencies such as Economia, Fritsch Heine Rapp Collins, she has been an Art Buyer at Jung von Matt for the last 10 years and Deputy Head of Art Buying since 2007.
Bianca has carried out the art buying for clients such as MERCEDES and WELLA PROFESSIONEL ever since. She has worked on the legendary DEUTSCH magazine launch campaign and collaborated on set with Peter Lindbergh, who shot Julia Stegner for last year’s BERLIN FASHION WEEK key visual. GoSee News presents several teasers, more can be viewed on her GoSee Profile.
We wanted to find out how she came about becoming an Art Buyer and what makes a good photo…
“I was 14 years old when I bought my first copy of Vogue and have now been a subscriber for the last 22 years. The fashion images were completely out of this world. I couldn't take my eyes off them - I was captivated by their strength and aesthetics. I carefully put the issues away in my drawer and couldn't stop dreaming about this other world that was so much more interesting than mine in small-town Germany.
What constitutes a good photo? When I can feel the idea and the photographer's personality. When the perspective is interesting, when the composition works. When the image is technically accomplished and of high quality. These images are often authentic or simply ingenious. They strike a chord. They don't aim to follow the constantly changing trends or are one further photo in the masses of images that flood the media of current times.
They are images, that make me want to hold onto them, look at them for a long time and encourage me to dream of the worlds depicted, similar to the Vogue images that I kept so lovingly in my desk drawers. That's what it's about for me.
I am looking forward to being part of the Screenings jury and am sure that we will be able to discover lots of new and inspiring talents, that will later be able to reach a large audience through the online gallery and inspire them just as they have inspired me.”
So, get going and send in those applications to www.SCREENings.org now. Bianca Winter and all the other judges are looking forward to unusual, exciting and fresh portfolios!
The 20 SCREENings finlalists will be presented at the UPdate - Salon for Photography on 14 May in Frankfurt (location: Palais im Zoo). The three top winners will be announced at the UPdate and will also be presented online on GoSee, as well as a group edition available for purchase and as prints from the seen.by online gallery.
