The Photographers’ Gallery, London : British Landscape Photography
British landscapes? What springs to mind are gently sloping hills in Wales, lush green Sherwood Forest from Robin Hood, the dark moors where the Hound of Baskerville got up to no good or the breathtaking mountains and sparkling lakes of the Lake District.
The Photographers’ Gallery is celebrating its recent move to Central London (16 – 18 Ramillies Street) with a collaboration with fashion store Liberty. The store is “synonymous with luxury and great design” and is an emporium of latest fashions and design classics, with fashions, cosmetics, accessories and furniture. Liberty is located just two minutes away from the The Photographers’ Gallery.
This luxury store will play host to British Landscape Photography, a group exhibition of eleven contemporary artists represented by The Photographers’ Gallery. The exhibition, with all photographs for sale, is being held in the East Atrium at Liberty and will run for a few more days until 8 March 2009.
The list of photographers featured includes Martin Cole, Ernst Fischer, Stephen Gill, Kevin Griffin, Mischa Haller, Nicholas Hughes, Chrystel Lebas, Mike Perry, Jem Southam, Stephen Vaughan and Mick Williamson. All of the artists involved have been inspired by landscape, yet each of the pieces approaches the subject in a unique and individual way to create different perspectives.
For example Stephen Gill, who uses his surroundings as his inspiration, combines photography and collage in his popular Hackney Flowers series, Mick Williamson captures the fleeting moments of everyday life, finding beauty in the smallest scenes and details and Kevin Griffin’s work Wave Studies takes inspiration from his fascination with the vital link between water and human life. We have a sneak preview here, but if you’re in the British capital we recommend you go and have a look yourself!
