Thomas Demand : Nationalgalerie, Berlin - a stylised show of the Federal Republic of Germany's eventful history

Since 18 September 2009, art and history enthusiasts have been flooding to the National Gallery in Berlin. The subject: Germany. Artist Thomas Demand presents an elaborate photographic solo exhibition of events throughout an action-packed history.

40 works present “crime scenes” which only become visible upon second glance, they pick out central themes of society, history and politics. Hence it is no coincidence that the exhibition is on show 60 years after the founding of the Federal Republic and 20 years after the fall of the Berlin wall.

Thomas Demand isn’t a photographer in the classic sense, he rather sees himself as a documenter of our media world, a reproducer and illusionist. Photography is just the medium in which his spatial constructions remain preserved and can be exhibited.

The location of the exhibition is equally as well chosen as its timing. The large glass hall of Mies van der Rohe’s new National Gallery is a significant symbol of the Federal Republic of Germany on the former border between East and West.

The project was made possible by the Friends of the National Gallery and the kind support of E.ON and Kvadrat.
