Who doesn't dream of Chicks on Speed ? subversive activities at the BAWAG Contemporary in Vienna

Chicks on Speed: they are Kathi Glas (born in Germany 1977, lives in Berlin), Melissa Logan (born 1970 USA, lives in Hamburg and New York) and Alex Murray-Leslie (born 1970 Australia, lives in Barcelona). Everything started in Munich 1997 where the trio first surfaced as an art and performance collective, and as a band, who produced their own music.

“Chicks on Speed will save us all” is the characteristic title of one of their records. Music, art and fashion are all numbers in their all girl revue. Clothing is performance, dressing-up and dressing-down, a daily ritual. The “feminist video art” genre is sustained as a political challenge, but also skilfully parodied.

The “Art Rules” Chicks blur boundaries between performance, art, music, theatre and fashion. Their subversive fan base love their exciting, confusing, challenging chaos of styles, ideas and practises, which is mixed with site-specific installations with pop, live music and art.

Now the three chicks will be rocking the BAWAG Contemporary off-space in Vienna for the whole of May. The BAWAG Foundation, Austria’s oldest non-profit making art organisation opened the BAWAG Contemporary off-space for artists in December 2008.

If you can’t make it to Vienna, then we highly recommend the three Super Surfer Girls’ MYSPACE site.
