ARTE - the German-French cultural TV channel's new look - our favourite channel's image spot on GoSee

Ever since its first airing, ARTE has always focused on artistic change – dynamics, inspiration and creativity are the channel’s most treasured gems. The new ARTE look, launched on 28th February 2011 reflects all these values.

Ulli Krieg, the artistic director of ARTE came up with the concept of the new look and he went about its realisation of in a suitably creative way. The new corporate design wasn’t created through a pitch to various agencies, instead a European team of artists and designers specialising in visual design, print and online was gathered together – a collaborative group of individual experts and specialists.

Dutch 3D artist Joost Korngold (Re*Nascent) created the ARTE logo for the screen with a 3D sculpture. The ARTE logo sculpture opens up in ever changing new variations and guides the viewer through the programmes.

Belgian director Joe Vanhoutteghem (CZAR) created the identity spots. They present extracts from a longer, kaleidoscopic story and take the viewer on a very, very strange journey with plenty of people, young and old, during the day and at night.

In addition to Joost Korngold and Joe Vanhoutteghem, the following artists worked on the new corporate design:

- Benjamin Cuénod from Switzerland (Scripted Reality) developed the on-air design based on the 3D sculpture.

- Tom Ising and Béla Stetzer from Germany supervised the off-air area with the design team.

- German designer Axel Schildt (OKAPI) had a leading role in the online section.

- German photographer Detlev Overmann accompanied the filming and interpreted the story in a series of images for the print support.

- Catherine Lagarde (Novaprod) produced the sound design with Paris-based French composer Laurent Parisi.

Ulli Krieg has been the artistic director of ARTE since 2009. Her work as a creative director has received multiple awards, at events such as the New York Festivals, the Promax/BDA Europe Design and Promotion Awards and the Eye & Ear Awards. She was nominated for the German Design Award in 2008.
