MUNDI - Too Cool for Gravity. the charming juggler between colourful fashion and remorseless art on GoSee.
Fashion designers are not necessarily bitchy and artists not always unapproachable. The exceptional Icelandic talent with the unpronounceable name Guðmundur Hallgrímsson – or MUNDI for short – knows how to juggle colours, forms and ideas like no one else can.
Visiting the studio of Mundi in Reykjavik. Due to the fact that everyone knows everyone else in Reykjavik, or at least, knows everyone else through somebody else, we managed to land a short notice appointment to take a look at the atelier and showroom of the arguably most controversial and most discussed fashion designer on the island. Malicious wagging tongues in the fashion industry call him a graphic designer who happens to make clothes. They think he does not take fashion seriously enough and leans himself out the window way too far. Others are just fans.
His manager, who, FYI, brought the musical CAVEMAN into our theatres, on the other hand greets us with a warm welcome. As it is customary on the island, we are offered a coffee first, but we are allowed to leave our shoes on before entering. Munti sits behind his PC with a big grin on his face. Apparently, he still needs to finish up his weekend schedule, but then he joins us in good spirits.
He is royally amused about our 'Too Hot for Iceland' shirt, because his first collection, with which he made his début during the Rendez-Vous Paris 2007, was called 'Too Cool for Gravity'. So, once the ice was broken, he showed us his admittedly completely bonkers films and drawings, snickering like a schoolboy.
The 20-something talent, who is closely affiliated with the Gelitin artist collective, already caused a stir with his events in NY and Paris. For his 'Versus Chamber V2' project, he staged a war with paints. As a result of duels between volunteers, wielding pots and jars, his collection pieces sported a unique and distinct design by the end of the evening.
With 'Rabbit Hole Movie', he presents his first short film, produced in Iceland’s rough and tumble look nature. Both projects are featured on GoSee. We are also pleased to showcase his last summer collection, as well as the upcoming A/W collection 2011/12, which was on show during the Fashion Week Reykjavik.
We recommend checking out the website and to enjoy taking your time with it. The site’s archive includes several inspiring and very shocking surprises indeed.
