Picture Alliance : fine art motifs by Antonius, sports archive with historical photos, gymnast Marcel Nguyen, footballer Toni Kroos, vintage advertising images and 50 year anniversary of the Berlin Wall's construction

The dpa picture agency focuses on photographers. Hence, Picture Alliance presents motifs by German-American photographer Antonius, who is known for his fine art, advertising and lifestyle photography. His artful visual composition mesmerises viewers with poetically arranged flowers and staged stills. Apart from his love of photography, Antonius creates events and his own film festivals. The German premier league will turn 50 in 2013. What better excuse for Picture Alliance to research vintage images of Germany’s premier league football? The elaborate sports archive is subject to a complete overhaul, including all types of sports, the archive also includes highlights such as the Olympic Games, motor-sports and boxing. A team of eight employees identify, scan, process and tag the pictures so they are ready for online use.

Photographer Frank May met gymnast Marcel Nguyen for a shoot in Stuttgart. Marcel Nguyen managed a super comeback following a fracture of his fibula at the European Gymnastics Championships in Berlin, winning both gold for the bar and bronze for the high bar. “It's a dream come true. A title, one bronze medal, what else could I want?” says the young athlete. Marcel will attempt to qualify for the Olympic Games in London 2012 during the upcoming world championship in Tokyo.

Photography appointment for the young star Toni Kroos – Picture Alliance photographer Jan Haas met the likeable youngster in Munich and shot him for the first official fan page. The 21-year old is considered to be one of the most talented footballers in Germany. Within the blink of an eye, he passed, shot and dribbled himself into the top class of the German footballers, wearing both the shirt of FC Bayern Munich and the national team.

Together with its management & consulting agency SportsTotal, Picture Alliance supervised the shoot, from the briefing to the post-production. The pictures were used in the design of the website, which features additional current sports photographs from Picture Alliance that show footballers in action.

The new PA MAGAZINE will be released in summer and discusses all things related to the agency, including the introduction of partner agency Advertising Archives. The archive’s British and American ads and magazine covers an extensive period ranging from 1850 to today. A staggering 41,000 pictures, ranging from advertising and TV-stills to film posters – always reflecting the style of their times – are now part of the historic range.

However, the archive can also satisfy any political needs, such as an elaborate overview of '50 years of the Berlin wall'. On the 13th of August 1961, the GDR began constructing the Berlin wall and Picture Alliance has got all the pictures.
