If Hieronymus Bosch and Rembrandt could have children, then Dean WEST would be their illegitimate son. Somewhere between Bosch’s fantastical hellscapes and Rembrandt’s masterful use of light and dark lies the work of West. Whether it’s an avant-garde personal project or a commercial campaign, whether portrait or a meticulously composed setting: West draws from a seemingly endless repertoire of ideas, talent and visual drama. His Old Master parents must be very proud of him.

Robert WESTRICH’s love for expansive vistas and epic landscapes is evident in all of his work, even when he turns his camera to photographing people. For Westrich, people are inseparable from their environment; he likes to use the surroundings to tell us who his subjects are.

In this case, they're guards, architects, construction workers, and sea oil crews. We can see that these are confident, adventurous individuals who are navigating through and shaping the modern world. It’s an approach that will resonate with many companies who are out there building the future. Heck, even that scarecrow seems to love being out in the open!

Despite ever-improving standards in car safety, what actually happens to us in a car crash is still something that’s largely in the hands of the gods when it comes down to it. We have to trust that that airbag or that seatbelt will do its job right up until the moment it’s too late to do anything about it. It’s a concern that lies at the heart of the “Safety is Invisible” campaign for Messring, one of the world's leading crash test facilities, recently launched with photographer David MAURER. Their aim is to give us as much peace of mind and control over car safety as possible, by making the invisible visible.

To do this, they test various car crash scenarios to reveal what really goes on underneath the car's exterior when an accident happens. Companies like Messring are there to ensure that the bold safety claims made by car manufacturers remain as transparent as possible (literally).

Being alone doesn't have be mean being lonely. Sometimes solitude can make the perfect companion. Chris DODD's latest personal project reminds us of the simple joys found in time spent alone. It’s a time to allow events to sink in, to mull things over, to ask for advice. By sinking into yourself a few levels, you can come back out re-energised, decisions made and ready to go. Time is a healer.

On a commision for construction giants HOCHTIEF, Tillmann FRANZEN was asked to photograph the newly built Office of Criminal Investigation in Düsseldorf. This monumental building appears inviting on the outside; a glass façade welcomes you in as natural light floods the entrance of the building. But hidden deep within, behind impenetrable concrete walls lies a more ominous place. Thousands of rifles, shotguns and pistols that were seized during crimes line the walls of the firearms vault. As Franzen lurks between the aisles, you can almost hear each gun whisper the story of its wicked past. In an equally foreboding room lies a machine that traces the path, speed and impact of a bullet, while further down the corridor forensic scientists carry out tests in the laboratory. Franzen’s series offers us a remarkable glimpse behind the scenes of the real world CSI.
