The last few days have been ripe with change: the cold wind has since blown past, the days are slowly becoming longer again and somehow, the days of summer hover in the air like the promise of an expected arrival. To farmers, this means the advent of harvest time. Tillmann FRANZEN's most recent work for ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST magazine captures the emotion and essence of these golden harvest days, by portraying a collection of classic and old tractors.
The photographer made sure to photograph the carefully restored machines within their natural surroundings – out on the fields instead of some random and characterless showrooms. When one takes a look at the pictures, the anthropomorphic pride of the tractors seems almost tangible, as they are resting on the fields after a long day of hard work. The motors are still thumping, while they slowly cool down in the tender embrace of the shade and still relish in what they achieved that day, long after the farmer himself has gone to bed.
Klas FOERSTER's latest project is a prime example of all his style's trademark characteristics – strong compositions and subtle light create a seducing effect. Hence, the series is distinguished by a 'Lost in Translation' atmosphere. An incredibly beautiful young girl loses herself in never-ending daydreams and is thankful for all the small distractions life throws her way. What lies beneath her mysterious smile?
The renowned Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur porcelain company has commissioned Gerrit SCHREURS for a photography project that documents a very special ice installation in Cologne. KPM has frozen some of its hand-made cup and saucer sets in blocks of ice, emphasising the timeless design by placing the pieces within the ice. The series sports an almost tragic and fairytale-like character. As soon as the ice melts, the porcelain will tumble out and smash into pieces.
Julia FULLERTON-BATTEN's series Mothers and Daughters is a story about the complex and fluctuating nature of the mother-daughter relationship. The series sheds light onto a very personal side of Julia, since her own relationship with her mother was a major source of inspiration for the series.
Each and every carefully composed scene – always featuring real mother and daughter pairings – documents a different aspect of the relationship: oscillating between tension and empathy, concern and support, coldness and love, pride and jealousy, past and future.
The photographer illustrates how the mother-daughter relationship is subject to running through different phases and continues to develop throughout the life cycle. The domestic scenes set in suburban America may appear superficial on the outset, but there are psychological truths to be found beneath the surface.
The new IVARY brand plans to open up its first international flagship store, solely dedicated to products related to the subject of sleep. Christian ROLFES was commissioned with developing a photography series that captures the core of the brand – sleep well.
The aptly named 'Traces of Sleep' series consists of a very clever visual idea, in which the impressions left on the pillows after leaving the warm beds form the IVARY Logo. Just like the pillows bear the lasting impressions of sleep, Rolf's series also leaves the viewers in awe of the series' quality and appeal.
To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, INTELLIGENT LIFE magazine commissioned NICK BALLON to photograph the '60 years in the same job' feature. His portrait series is a prime example of how much can be said in just one picture.
It's Ballon's eye for the little details, which make each and every picture so poignant: the confident smirk of Selfe, Glanville's tired eyes, after spending 60 years in the football ranks, Naish as he gazes at the light in front of his door, without a trace of regret and the tranquil, controlled demeanour of Sir Peter Hall, which made him one of the global theatre scene's most cherished artists.
The portraits are authentic, personal and inspiring – a perfect homage to the people portrayed within.
Denis ROUVRE is publishing a book featuring his 'Gravure de Sport' portraits (2008) of French athletes right before the Olympic Games in Beijing. The striking portraits show the statuesque athletes removed from their usual athletic context and focuses on the individuals instead.
Not restraining his proven talent for playfulness, Rouvre finds something in the personality of each individual athlete and emphasises it to the extreme – a gown for the elegant badminton player, a pimp-outfit for the eye-catching javelin thrower, a James Bond post for the pistol marksman...
Yet, even these unusual motifs cannot mask the confidence, pride and determination of the top athletes in every picture. Their whole life is dedicated to one single moment and all the faces are painted in the hope of victory. Through Rouvre's eyes, we can glance behind the façades of the modern gladiators and catch a fleeting impression of their personalities.
Chris DODD shot the KIT KAT CHUNKY Champion campaign for JWT and the Skive advertising agency (who came up with the claim: Have a Break, Have a Kit Kat).
His lively portraits show four different 'Chunky Champions', all holding a different limited edition flavour in hand. KitKat has published the series on the KitKat Facebook page and the 6.5 million fans will be able to vote, which flavour is the most to their liking.
