Maik Scharfscheer : in the ring with boxer Yaniel Merino for the LEICA M9 launch campaign and in Rügen for TCHIBO

As previously announced on GoSee, we hereby present the latest LEICA M9 campaign, which Maik Scharfscheer shot in Cuba. 21-year-old talented boxer Yaniel Merino posed for his camera.

Yaniel was discovered by state talent scout and has trained at the renowned Rafael Trejo boxing school in Havana ever since – an important step in Yaniel’s path to achieving his dream of Olympic Gold.

Boxing is the national sport on the largest of the Antilles islands. Up to 20,000 boxers train at hundreds of boxing schools in Cuba; around 4,000 of which box on an international scale. Impressive numbers, no other country has such an authentic and lively passion for the sport.

A national decree, which generally bans the professional practise of sport has prevented the commercialisation of boxing since 1962. Even today Cuba’s boxers still train in the most simple, almost archaic style conditions.; a reason why boxing in Cuba has managed to stick to its original state – an authentic fight, man to man for fame and honour.

Yaniel, who longs to be an Olympic champion one day, also states that he fights to win, for himself and for Cuba. When asked of his favourite win he doesn’t take long to answer: it was the fight that won him an invitation to the Cuban national league.

The introduction of the Leica M-System in 1954 and its range finder principle enabled great freedom in reportage and artistic photography. A Leica M is the perfect tool for photographers to capture a moment discreetly, quietly and without any delay.

The launch of the Leica M8 in 2006 kicked off a new era in the history of the range finder: the M-System became digital. The Leica M9 saw Leica achieve an additional milestone in digital photography: it is the first range finder camera with a sensor and format of 24 x 36 mm. Making the Leica M9 the smallest full format system camera in the whole world.

The Leica M is simple and easy to use. Even for photographers that are used to using SLR systems. There are no unnecessary functions or complicated menus.

The short shutter lag of the range finder makes the Leica M camera one of world’s fastest cameras.

Maik also photographed the latest ‘Cool Running’ series for TCHIBO, realised on Rügen island, Germany. See the motifs here on GoSee.
