“It is when I see their faces, that I long to photograph them. That is my fantasy life. They keep me dreaming.”
Those are the words of Paul Jasmin. It's awful that some people may have thought something awful while reading those words. He found the majority of his models at university or in Pasadena where he teaches, some of them are his friends' children with whom he grew up and which he saw growing up into very beautiful individuals.
Almost all of the photographs were created in the vicinity of his apartment on Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles. Or even inside his apartment, located inside a building which once functioned as the love nest for William Randolph Hearst and actress Marion Davies, how suitably Hollywood!
It seems that Paul voluntarily lets the dreams imprison him in the harsh light of 2010. His images are ridden with yearning. Be it the yearning for youth, beauty or an innocence long lost?
He tells his students: “California is an alluring place, but I look at Hollywood as a state of mind; it’s all in the imagination. You have to create your own reality; with work, with home and with friends”.
About his students, which include Sofia Coppola, he has the following statement to make: “That is my fantasy life. They keep me dreaming.” We will gladly dream along.
