About KARKKAINEN

Lasse Kärkkäinen began his photographic career at the tender age of 16 with a summer job at the local newspaper on his home of Åland Islands in the Baltic Sea. There then followed a few years as an assistant, interrupted only by a short period studying art history and philosophy at the Åbo Academy in Finland. During his long career Lasse has worked with most major advertising agencies in Sweden and been awarded with a number of Guldägg and other awards. His strength lies in his calm and meticulousness. "I don’t need unusual objects to create something unique. My challenge is to make interesting pictures from what would appear to be uninteresting subjects." Lasse works primarily with still life but also photographs children and animals. "I have a lot of patience which gives me the ability to wait in certain situations. So the genre suits me pretty well." Professionally, he is inspired by life in general. "If you are active and open to new things you can find inspiration in anything." He admits that he has a tendency to fixate on different projects, from gardening to renovating boats. In addition, he spends a lot of time in the Åland Archipelago. "I suppose I’m a person who jumps between extremes," he says with a laugh. "A common factor in my interests is that I’m often left with dirty nails!"
