AMETSUCHI - Rinko Kawauchi’s new photo project exhibition at Priska Pasquer and book published by Kehrer Verlag. Preview on GoSee

The word Ametsuchi, is comprised of two Japanese characters meaning ‘heaven and earth’. Rinko Kawauchi (*1972 in Shiga, Japan) brings together images of distant constellations and tiny figures lost within landscapes, as well as photographs of a traditional style of controlled-burn farming in which the cycles of cultivation and recovery span decades.

The Japanese photographer comments on her new project, “the sunset I see from the window of my home tonight is similar but different from what I saw yesterday. Every day is in a continuum of new days, each somehow different from the next. [...] Throughout the world, we are comrades who share grace, and share as well the challenges to overcome any number of difficult obstacles. Even if our paths never cross, we who exist now on the same Earth certainly share something, a shared time and a shared space.”

The book recently won the ‘Silver Winning Title’ award at Deutschen Fotobuchpreis 2014 and is designed by Dutch designer Hans Gremmen, who adds a monumental and mysterious touch to the book with a seductive origami binding (Hardcover with Japanese binding, 24 x 34cm, 80 pages, 40 colour ills., ISBN 978-3-86828-396-9 , 58.00 Euro, 2013).

In addition the works are on show for the first time in Europe at Cologne’s Priska Pasquer Gallery, which specialises in contemporary Japanese photo art. The gallery has a wonderful signed and numbered special edition by the Japanese artist… framed for just 100 EUR… an absolute must have. One of them is of course pride of place in our office right now…
