'Last year, I created a hand-painted book with quotes from Donald Trump and his henchmen: Hate Is What We Need. Chronicle Books published a facsimile edition (available via ChronicleBooks.com and Amazon.com). This year, when the lies and injustices multiplied, it didn't seem sufficient. So I created a second edition: The Administration of Cruelty and Stupidity. I also painted 40 large broadsides, with quotes not only from Trump but also from victims who have suffered under his regime and from those who have raised their voices against it. We mounted them on the wall like the news of the last two years: as an attack, a wild flood. We invite you to take a look at them – and hope that they'll inspire you for the upcoming election,' Ward Schumaker says about his current project.
The crowded opening reception on Saturday, 20 October, was a very emotional evening. One guest left, crying: “I just can’t take it.” People shared their anxiety about the turn-of-events in the country, the strong fear about the loss of liberties and the threats of physical violence against minorities - transgender folks, gays, people of color, Jews, reporters.
When a ten year-old girl appeared, who had created her own Trump Papers on small sheets of paper, the artist helped her mount them on a ledge in the gallery and she sold many of them – many! – for US$1 each. "We all think of her as our hope fore the future,” Ward said.
Trump Papers was on display from 20 October to 6 November, 2018, at the jackfischergallery.com in San Francisco. Several more motifs can be seen on jackfischergallery.com.
