BENEATH II, PART ONE - projected on the facade of the Federal Economic Chamber in Vienna, Austria
After the wonderful success of BENEATH I in Venice and Paris, BENEATH II was now presented in Vienna – projected onto the facade of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce. Photographer Susanne Stemmer on her beautiful installation : “BENEATH invites us to give ourselves a chance to immerse under surfaces, into a surrounding where we are free to re-consider conventions and stereotyped points of view. A place where we can drop our masks we think we have to wear to exist in our societies. BENEATH is an invitation to change perspective and point of view.”
Specialized in underwater visuals, artist Susanne Stemmer challenges us to peek below the surface. The characters depicted in her works free themselves from everything that binds them or weighs them down above the surface. This physical freedom coinciding with the imaginary loss of gravity enables the characters to gain mental and spiritual freedom. A new freedom in which seemingly important conventions can be questioned and re-considered. Masks and images, constructed to exist in society, are increasingly dissolved under the surface. A moment of silence in the noise of the big city, in the speed of our ever-accelerating lives. This marks the beginning of an inner journey into a world of self-discovery and the rediscovery of long-forgotten freedom – back to ourselves.
BENEATH II celebrated its premiere in Vienna – but don’t worry, part II will be on the road, too : “We’ll be in big noisy cities around the globe – keep an eye open!” we are delighted to quote Susanne.
